True Stories · ★★☆

Checked Twice

Canada, July 1983. A brand-new airliner’s fuel gauges are out of order, so the tanks are measured by hand and the crew work out how much fuel to add; the figures are checked again at the stopover. Halfway to Edmonton, at 41,000 feet, both engines stop: the tanks are empty. There is no leak and no theft. What happened?

How to solve this riddle

This is a situation puzzle, a lateral thinking riddle solved by asking questions. Read the scene again and separate the facts from your assumptions. With a narrator who knows the answer, ask one question at a time: they answer yes, no or irrelevant.
